Safari / Nature Tours in Gibraltar

If you’re into nature, Gibraltar’s more than just a rock in the sea. Its tiny size means you can cover a surprising amount of ground in a day, and the wildlife is genuinely fascinating. The Barbary macaques are the most famous locals. You’ll find them hanging around the Upper Rock reserve, especially near the Apes’ Den. But there’s more than monkeys here. I’ve seen rarer birds like peregrine falcons and migrating buzzards, especially in spring or autumn.

One of my favorite things to do is the guided nature walks starting early morning before it gets hot. These tours usually take you through the Mediterranean Steps trail, where the views open up over to Spain and Morocco if it’s clear. Don’t forget to ask about the native orchids or the endemic Gibraltar candytuft flowering in spring. And if you have time, a boat tour around the Bay reveals dolphins and seals,it never gets old watching those creatures glide through the water.

A little local tip: bring good walking shoes and a bottle of water. The trails can get steep and the sun is no joke, even in winter. Also, if you want less crowd, try weekdays or the off-season months of November or February. In Gibraltar’s wild spots, quiet makes all the difference.
