Gibraltar Rock Tour: Nature, History, and Wildlife Experience

This private tour in Gibraltar suits visitors interested in natural landmarks, wildlife, and historic sites around the Rock.

Highlights

  • Pillars of Hercules where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea, with views across to Africa.
  • St Michael’s Cave featuring spectacular limestone caverns formed over millions of years.
  • Skywalk glass viewing platform offering panoramic sea views and a visit to Gibraltar’s wild monkeys.
  • Great Siege Tunnels hand-carved passages that defended Gibraltar during historic sieges.

Description

The tour begins at the Pillars of Hercules, the unique natural point where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea, offering views across the Strait of Gibraltar to Morocco in North Africa.

Next is St Michael’s Cave, a major natural attraction with easy access and minimal walking. Visitors explore vast caverns shaped by rainwater filtering through limestone over millions of years.

At the Top of the Rock, the Skywalk provides a glass viewing platform with 360-degree panoramic views over the Mediterranean. Nearby is the Upper Apes’ Den, home to over 200 Barbary Macaques, Europe’s only wild monkeys living freely in packs within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. Local legend says Gibraltar will remain British as long as these monkeys live there.

The tour continues to the northern side of the Rock to explore the Great Siege Tunnels, hand-carved during the Great Siege and key to Gibraltar’s historic military defense against Spanish and French forces.

On the way down, you view the Moorish Castle exterior, constructed initially in 1160 CE and rebuilt in the 14th century, notable for visible cannon damage from past battles.

The tour concludes with a drive through Gibraltar’s Old Town after exiting the Nature Reserve.
